An Open Museum Connecting the World Through Writing
Greetings.
I am Kim Myung-in, Director of the National Museum of World Writing Systems.
The National Museum of World Writing Systems opened its doors in June 2023
born of a commitment to honor the diversity and irreplaceable value of the world's scripts, and to ensure that Korea, as a nation blessed with Hangeul, plays a leading role in preserving the depth and dignity of our shared human heritage.Since our opening, we have traced the vast journey of human writing and civilization through our permanent exhibitions,
while our special exhibitions have posed deeper questions about the diversity and meaning of writing culture what it carries, what it asks of us, and why it matters.
Beyond the gallery walls, our academic forums, educational programs,
and cultural events have helped establish us as something genuinely new: a museum alive with ideas, responsive to the community around it, and becoming one of Korea's defining cultural landmarks. Our vision is to grow into a global center for writing culture in the fullest sense
a place where scripts and written heritage from every corner of the world are preserved, celebrated, and given the significance they deserve.
To realize this vision, we will deepen our transnational research,
positioning ourselves as both the world's hub for writing culture and a proud center of K-culture on the global stage. Alongside this, we will present our finest exhibitions spanning the full landscape of language, script, record, and media and communication.Through diverse cultural events and educational programs,
we will lead a regional cultural renaissance boldly moving beyond the artifact-centered museum of the past. Embracing interactive environments and the full potential of ICT and emerging media, we intend to build a museum without walls or barriers: one where every visitor is an active participant in the living story of human expression. The National Museum of World Writing Systems will continue to step closer to you as a museum unlike any the world has seen before,
where all of humanity, near and far, can richly and fully experience everything that writing culture has to offer.
